Day after reflections
I first want to congratulate President-elect Trump for recapturing the Oval Office. From announcing his campaign again to almost getting assassinated on July 13th to his victory last n ight, it's sure been a wild ride! It has been said he hasn't stopped running since losing to Joe Biden in 2020. I would also likle to congratulate VP Harris for running a good campaign however it fell short. A few observations \ the day after the election.
I find the most interesting, the race in a little county in Texas called Starr County, a county that has a heavy Hispanic population, and hasn't voted for a Republican since 1896, that's 132 years!! It's remarkable because all the Democrats ever talk about is Trump's racism . However Starr County is right on the Mexican border and has definitely seen its share of crime coming across the southern border. T he Democrats again said Trump's border policies were racist and by endorsing Trump you're endorsing racism. That theory has been completely blown away since Trump gained Latino \voters by a wide margin. They saw the action behind the words before and they are looking forward to witnessing the same action They actually like Trumps border policies and reject the idea that they are "racist"
The second was black men, which was also a major shock. Like the Latinos, blacks ignored the fake charges of racism and saw the results of Trump's economy. Blacks remember the economy before COVID was a pretty good for them. They definitely saw Trump's policies helping them before and knew he didn't take their vote for granted. Trump was a big supporter of programs that trained them and put them to work. He actually talked to people that didn't support him in the past, but could support him in the future. Trump treated them with respect. What did the Democrats do? Challenge their loyalty. For example Trump's support among Black men in Georgia jumped from 11% in 2020 to 22% in 2024. Republicans appreciated the rise in support among black men..
A bit of a less impact but still shocking was Trump topped Harris amongst Jewish voters as well. T he story isn't that he won the Jewish vote, but he chipped away enough of the bloc to defeat Harris. The shift is a sign Trump is more trusted than Kamala when it comes to Middle East issues. I don't have the knowledge or the energy to comment further. However I need to point to the Trump is really the first president in modern times to keep us out of military conflicts! Something completely overlooked by warhawlks in both parties!
On a local level first the bad news. Cape May's own Curtis Bashaw lost the US Senate seat to Andy Kim. The seat was vacated by disgraced Senator Bob Menendez who I personally believe needs to be behind bars. I has known Curtis ever since moving down to Cape May and he did a wonderful job crisscrossing the state. I have supported Curtis since day one and truly believe he had a shot running as a Republican in true blue New Jersey. I often said Nee Jersey Republicans are definitely a different breed!!! I was among his supporters the night before election night at the Lobster House cheering him on!
Now onto the good news!!! I want to congratulate my friend Steve Bodnar on gaining a set on Cape May City Council. I have gotten to know Steve these last few months and saw his stellar performance at the Cape May Candidate Forum. Steve has the ideas and temperament Cape May needs right now and can not wait to witness him take the oath of office on New Year's Day!
I posted the following Facebook status the day before Election Day and I wanted to repost it here to remind people I still feel the same way I do now I did two days ago:
Unlike years past t his year I have tiptoed around the political discussions online. This isn't because I don't have thoughts, I certainly do. However I learned my that lesson friends are worth more than politics. On this election eve I want everyone to know, no matter what happens, everything will be alright. I know because, as corny as it sounds, I still believe in the American dream and the American people!!. People need to take a breath, then do their civic duty go to the polls..........................AND VOTE!!!!!!!!
